Mauritius Holidays

Mauritius is a beautiful island for holidays in the Indian Ocean. Although its very close to Africa, it's more influenced by its British and French history and a large Indian society. Aside from the Mauritius Christmas holiday and New Year holiday period, it doesn't really have a high or low holiday season. The winter in Mauritius is from July to September, when daytime temperatures are lower. With less rain and humidity, this is one of the idyllic to visit. Between January and April, the days can be hot and humid. December to March is the best holiday season if you want to go diving, when the sea is clear. Mauritius Holidays together with Réunion and Rodrigues islands is part of the Mascarene Islands. This archipelago was formed in a sequence of undersea volcanic eruptions, as the African plate drifted over the Réunion hotspot. They are no longer volcanically active, and the hotspot now rests under Réunion. The island of Mauritius itself is formed around a central plateau, with its highest peak in the southwest, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire at 828 metres. Around the plateau, the original crater can still be distinguished from several mountains.

Anti-cyclones affect the country during May to September. Cyclones affect the country during November-April. Hollanda (1994) and Dina (2002) were the worst two last cyclones to have affected the island.

The island's capital and largest city is Port Louis, in the northwest. Other important towns are Curepipe, Vacoas, Phoenix, Quatre Bornes, Rose-Hill and Beau-Bassin .

The island is well known for its natural beauty. Author Mark Twain, for example, noted in Following the Equator, his personal travelogue, "You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius". (This quote is often taken out of context. Twain actually wrote: "From one citizen you gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.
